Viewed Wins The 2008 Melbourne Cup

Viewed Viewed Wins The 2008 Melbourne CupViewed wins the $5.5 Million 2008 Melbourne Cup giving Bart Cummings his 12th win and 250th Group 1 and jockey Blake Shinn his first Melbourne Cup.  Viewed managed to hold onto a nose margin over the fast finishing Bauer who has just narrowly missed repeating Media Puzzle’s 2002 triumph.

The race was run at a ridiclous tempo with the Adian Obrien trio true to their word of pushing the pace out in front by the time the field turned form home both Septimus and Alessandro Volta where clearly struggling and Honolulu had already drifted off the pace all together.  They all finished embarrassingly for what they set out to achieve with Honolulu last, Alessandro Volta 20th and Septimuis 18th.  For the ‘greatest’ stayer in the world, well pfft, never had it never will.

Not that I can really talk I guess my picks of Littorio, Boundless, Perfound Beauty and Littorio were never really in it. For the record Gallopin did not finish out the race.  For my main chance Littorio the race was not run to suit, as it was for the vast majority of the field.  This is the first time in some time that I have not had a place gettor for the Cup.  Never mind I am sure that I am not alone, the first 4 in NSW paid $500K and the trifecta was close to $80K.

But thankfully in our poll, of who would win the Cup, we had 11 readers select Viewed as the winner, so hopefully you backed that up with a huge collect!

So, where did your horse finish?

Cox Plate and Moonee Valley Cup Review

Not going to spend to much time on the Cox Plate that was basically given to Maldivian on say, a silver platter. Seemed to me everyone was to busy worrying about what Princess Coup and Samantha Miss etc were going to do and forgot all about what Maldivian WAS doing up front. By the time they realised it was all to late. Well done to Danny Nikolic on Zipping who finally wised up at the 1000m mark and started to go.

Cox Plate Replay

The Moonee Valley Cup, run and won by Gallopin and moves into 23rd on the Order of Entry for the Melbourne Cup and now a certain starter. The news not so good for Bauer who remains outside of the top 24 after 3rd acceptances today at 25th spot so would be looking for a few scratchings to move him into the field, the likes of Red Ruler may come out, he is currently under a fitness cloud.

The Saab Quality is full of horses are nominated for the Cup and all can leapfrog Bauer and make the Melbourne Cup field as the winner of the Saab Quality is exempt from the Melbourne Cup ballot.

Horses such as Baughurst, Book of Kells, Chiefcomingfirst, Dandaad, Largo Lad, Magic Instinct, Moatize, Get Up Jude and Newport are all nominated for the Saab Quality and are still in the Melbourne Cup picture

For any that had their hard earned on Dolphion Jo who was on track for his 3rd straight Melbourne Cup run, has a slight tear to his near fore suspensory ligament and was ruled out Friday.

Bauer On The Media Puzzle Path With Geelong Cup Win!

Bauer today booked his spot in the Melbourne Cup with an impressive win in the Group 3 $200,000 2406m Geelong Cup, Bauer beat home Moatize, Magic Instinct and the pre-race favouriate Light Vision.

Bauer is now into $24’s on betfair, you could have got $90 just 3 short weeks ago and into $15 on the NSW TAB, yes I got $90’s :)

So what does this tell us besides that Australia has basically zero staying talent?  Well, to point out the obvious, that the Cup will be heading overseas!

I mentioned earlier that I’d put up my current top four based on my method to tip Cup winners (well more recently Cup places) and here is it in order for who will win the Melbourne Cup in 2008

1. All The Good
2. Sirmione
3. Profound Beauty
4. Littorio

This of course could change with a number of key races to come, Sirmione will I think run very well in the Cox Plate this weekend at value and there are a number of other Melbourne Cup horses running, such as Zipping, so he could end up in this list, but it would not change to much from this

Bauer’s Geelong Cup win has it in 5th on my rankings
