Cox Plate Preview

Here it is, the big one, the $3M WS Cox Plate, the best weight for age race going round.  In what is one of the most open Cox Plates nothing will surprise come 4:30pm at Moonee Valley as you cannot put a line through to many of these runners, perhaps only Sir Slick would be would be the horse you would rule out completely.

Sir Slick will come across from the wdie gate 11 to take up the running, along with Manhattan Rain and Rock Kingdom.  I would say this is where I would rule out Manhattan Rain, having to come forward from a wide gate and take up the running over the 2040 metres wil be to much for the 3 year old.  Also, it could easily get trapped 3 wide, as the straight at MV is only 178m, so will either need to burn a lot to take a lead position or be content to sit wide.

Spped Gifted can find itself in the same position having to run wide until they go up the side.  Road to Rock and Heart of Dreams to get the ideal run behind the pace coming from the 1 and 3 gates, So You Think, Nom Du Jeu (needs it wet to have an impact) all settling well.  Black Piranha and Zipping to race off the pace after the jump with Whobegotyou and El Segundo taking up the rear positions from their wide gates.

This is where I think the story of the race will be told.  Looking back where Heart of Dreams has beaten Whobehotyou is when Heart of Dreams has had the inner gate and Whobegotyou the outside gate.  It seems to be whenever the other one has to race back, due to the wide gate, they give the other runner to much of a start.  We can see this repeated in the Par Lap, the Underwood and Yalumba.  In the Yalumba, they both jumped from inner barriers, Heart of Dreams did get to far back and was taking distance off Whobegotyou at the finish.

I also don’t think Whobegotyou can take on the sprint over the required Cox Plate, normally the sprint is on for 400m in most races, but at the Valley they will start putting the presure on at the 1000m, for Whobegotyou to make a move he’ll ahve to coming wide around the famous Moonee Valley home bend or have to sit behind the runners and hope for a rails run.  I don’t think Whobegotyou or Oliver will be looking for a rails run and will be wide and fading coming to the line.  in contrast Heart of Dreams will have an inside run the length of the race and has just a good a kick as WhoBegotyou, cover less distance, the only concern I have is how fast Sir Slick will be moving back through the field, take care not to get collected as it shoots to the back of the field.

Another reason I’ll put my dollars on Heart of Dreams is seeing Vigor come home in the Caulfield, Vigor won the Makybe Diva over 1600m, with Heart of Dreams 2 lengths away (with zero luck) 5th.  As per my comments on the Caulfeild Cup, if Typoon Tracy wins, get on Vigor for the Caulfield Cup, Vigor bobbed up for 3rd, paying a nice $6 the place.  There is some form around that race, and Heart of Dreams has either been at the heels of Whobegotyou or beaten it.

So our selections:

1 – Heart of Dreams
2 – Road to Rock
3 – Whobegotyou
4 – Speed Gifted

In the Schweppes Stakes we also like No 7 Mic Mac.  he was tightened late in the race and would have finished better then the 5th, a wni over Whobegotyou and a close 2nd to the same horse, only query is back to 1200, but has a 4 from 5 record at the distance.

Who Will Win the 2009 WS Cox Plate? Take our Poll

Who do you think will win the 2009 WS Cox Plate?  Whobegotyou has dominated the betting market for the last few months and in our opinon is well over the odds at one point touching $2.40 and now drifting out to $2.80 and may continue to do so as punters look elsewhere for value and an upset.  There is nothing more then satisfying then taking on a short priced favouriate and winning.  Who do you think will win this weekends WS Cox Plate?

Whobegotyou remains the Cox Plate favouriate after the barrier draw this morning despite being alloted the wide gate of 10 in the 14 horse field.  Heart of Dreams who worked well over 1600m this morning has firmed from $8.50 to $7 after drawing gate 3.  The only other horse under double figure odds, Speed Gifted with barrier 12.

Rangirangdoo didn’t take up final acceptances this morning making room for Sir Slick.

Cox Plate and Moonee Valley Cup Review

Not going to spend to much time on the Cox Plate that was basically given to Maldivian on say, a silver platter. Seemed to me everyone was to busy worrying about what Princess Coup and Samantha Miss etc were going to do and forgot all about what Maldivian WAS doing up front. By the time they realised it was all to late. Well done to Danny Nikolic on Zipping who finally wised up at the 1000m mark and started to go.

The Moonee Valley Cup, run and won by Gallopin and moves into 23rd on the Order of Entry for the Melbourne Cup and now a certain starter. The news not so good for Bauer who remains outside of the top 24 after 3rd acceptances today at 25th spot so would be looking for a few scratchings to move him into the field, the likes of Red Ruler may come out, he is currently under a fitness cloud.

The Saab Quality is full of horses are nominated for the Cup and all can leapfrog Bauer and make the Melbourne Cup field as the winner of the Saab Quality is exempt from the Melbourne Cup ballot.

Horses such as Baughurst, Book of Kells, Chiefcomingfirst, Dandaad, Largo Lad, Magic Instinct, Moatize, Get Up Jude and Newport are all nominated for the Saab Quality and are still in the Melbourne Cup picture

For any that had their hard earned on Dolphion Jo who was on track for his 3rd straight Melbourne Cup run, has a slight tear to his near fore suspensory ligament and was ruled out Friday.

Maldivian Valiant, Tuesday Joy impressive…but Septimus new Cup Favouriate

animatedbanner1 Maldivian Valiant, Tuesday Joy impressive...but Septimus new Cup Favouriate

There was a lot of action over the weekend not just here in Australia but around the globe for the build up to the 2008 Melbourne Cup.

Maldivian was a valiant 4th in the Group II Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Maldivian had to do a lot of work alone to chase down the early leaders Sir Slick and Jungle Ruler before running out of juice and overtaken by Guillotine, Casual Pass and Tears I Cry, the race did nothing more then put cash in the bookies pockets to be honest. This was not a race for Maldivian, not even sure why he ran it myself, maybe the connections thought it was an easy Group 2 win. I think he is being a little over raced and if reports are correct that he’ll be lining up in the Underwood Stakes again Weekend Hussler and Light Fantastic, might be overdone come Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup time.

Tuesday Joy meanwhile firmed in Melbourne Cup betting with a win in the Group II Stocks Stakes flashing home late to snatch it from Devil Moon that was in my mind the best horse in the race. Devil Moon jumped from gate 13 well and pushed up early and had to sit 4 wide the entire circuit and to be just beaten by Tuesday Joy was a great run, I’ll be all over Devil Moon next start if he draws a good gate. And a note for all those thinking of Tuesday Joy repeating Makybe Diva’s Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double, with a win at Moonee Valley, Tuesday Joy could easily start the Cox Plate and then into the Melbourne Cup skipping the Caulfield Cup.
